WHAT CAN WEARING GEMS DO FOR YOU?

Under what stars were you born?
Did Eve and Adam wear gems in the garden of Eden? We likely will never know. However, given every human being’s desire to look and feel beautiful it is very likely. For eons, women, men and children have adorned themselves with flowers, feathers, animal parts, gems and precious metals to play, seduce, impress, or establish their status. Gems are also have been given other roles.

Over the centuries, many have studied precious and semi-precious gems and metals and their effect on human behaviour. Vedic sages and other observers of nature and human beings found out that have the power to balance the effect of the movement of planets on your dosha. The Tibetan became masters of that science to the point that they developed gem and metal medication in powder, tincture or capsule form for royalty.

Master tuners
Gemmologists have long matched precious and semi-precious stones to the birthday month. This is common knowledge and I am sure you know yours. Ayurvedic astrologers go further, recommending with which metal they should be mounted, and on which finger or other body part to wear it for specific results. They have also known for a long time that placing gems on the chakras of corresponding colour attracts or repels certain energies and balances their vibration much the same way an essential oil or a tuning fork would. It’s quite fascinating to feel them at work.

This morning I was light headed and unable to focus or to start any productive task.  Clearly, my Vata element was out of balance. At my wits end, I went in the garden and sat on a big plain granite rock and held it with both hands. This helped somewhat but what helped even more was to go back inside and put on my ruby pendant. Since the ruby is quite small, I added a pendant with a garnet and a citrine, my dosha stones. That combination turned out to be exactly what I needed.

The practicalities
To be effective, the ring needs to be
open to allow light on the skin.
To be effective, the stone need to be worn on the skin. This means that a ring or pendant needs to have an open back so that the light can cross the gem and reach the skin. Those of you used to wearing jewellery on top of your clothes will find this quite unorthodox. If you don't want to pay for precious stones, buy their semi-precious equivalents.

Since most people have a dual dosha, combining gems is the way to go, but the relative size of the stones needs to be taken into account. You can get a precise gem/metal combination by consulting an Ayurvedic astrologer. Trying various gems ‘for feel’ can be useful, but there are contra-indications. Make sure you clean the stone first (in a bowl of water—without salt, in full sunlight for 6 to 8 hours) and then charge it with a corresponding mantra. This is particularly needed if you bought your stone from a store where many people handled them or if it was worn by someone before.

If you have a dual dosha, use the stone that will heal the dosha that is most out of balance. Choose only one to start with.
The nine-gem necklace and the try-metal bracelet (left) are
perfect for any dress and for any occasion!
  • Vata: emerald, jade, peridot, yellow sapphire, topaz, garnet or ruby will help you ground, relieve fear or anxiety, and increase your will.
  • Pitta: moonstone, clear quartz, pearls, emerald, blue sapphire will cool you down and reduce irritation of physical or emotional nature.
  • Kapha: garnet, ruby, blue sapphire, amethyst will make you feel warmer, dryer and lighter.
You can also safely assume that:
  •  if you feel sad or depressed or if you have a Kapha dosha, avoid wearing pearls or moonstone
  •  if you feel angry or irritable or if you have a Pitta dosha, avoid wearing ruby or garnet
  •  if you feel ungrounded or if you have a Vata dosha, avoid blue sapphires, emeralds or jade items
Over time, I learned from experience that:
To keep the rose colour to your quartz
avoid putting it in the sun.
  • amethyst works somewhat like lavender essential oil
  • red gems are very supportive for anemia
  •  lapis lazuli is great to open the 3rd eye, but too much of good thing creates disbalance
  •  wearing a tri-metal bracelet (silver, gold and copper) is balancing whether you are in balance or not and it feeds your physical body with ‘vitamins’ that are not found in food
  •  quartz helps with communication and connects earth and sky, whether in our physical body, in technology and in the natural environment
  • energy wise, wearing a nine-gem necklace is akin to a diet that includes all food groups
  • wearing a gem that doesn’t suit you affects your pulse
  •  yogourt cleans and nourishes gems as well as it does the skin!
