Making your own shampoo: a healthy, inexpensive and fun choice (2)

A simple, fun, effective and affordable recipe

Your hair and piggy will be happy.
As promised in my last blog, here is a super simple shampoo recipe to make. Since this shampoo does not have the commercial ingredients mentioned previously, do not expect it to foam, to last as long and to leave you hair plasticky silky as regular shampoos do. It also takes more of this soap to wash your hair. By how much? It really depends on the length of your hair. After shampooing, you may wish to use Face to Grace rosemary and cloves hair rinse and lime hair revitalizer, or your regular conditioner. Your hair and your live will love it for a long, long time!

And to start the fun, why not put on the HairShampoo or Black Shampoo CD or anything that sets you in the mood.

Safety:

a) Make sure your kitchen is well ventilated during the boiling process
b) Although I always prefer glass bottles to preserve the purity and longevity of natural products, plastic bottles are the safest whether you use your shampoo in the bathtub or at the kitchen sink.
c) Make sure you label your bottles

The ancient soapnut wears its name well.
Ingredients:
• 15 soap nutes
• 3 litres of water, preferably filtered or distilled water
• ¾ tsp grated rock salt
• 1 tsp baking soda
For fun or to add variety to the smell, add a fist full of your favourite herb such as sage, lavender or chamomile.

Method:
1. Boiling the soap nuts in water
2. Cool off
3. Boil a 2nd time, adding finely grated rock salt
4. Cover to cool off
5. Strain
6. Next day: boil a 3rd  time
7. Cool off and filter
8. Pour into 1 litre sterilized bottles
9. For each bottle, pour 1/3 cup of the liquid in a measuring cup, add 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 10 drops of essential oil of your choice (sage, lavender, chamomile)
10. Shake well.
11. Add the above to the content of each bottle and shake well.
12. Transfer into practical containers, eg. re-use and old shampoo bottle.
13. For an added dose of fun, create a funky label.

By aiming the squirt cap directly on your scalp at the root of the hair, you’ll find that you use less shampoo than by pouring some in your hand. Your hair will love it and your whole body too!
